Waller ‘s poetry takes its conceit from speaking to a rose, instructing it how to act as metaphor to the woman who will receive it, rrose for beauty emerging into the world, and for the death of all beautiful things created.
The genesis of Eric Whitacre ‘s Go, lovely Rose coincides with the beginning of his own musical career. The choir performed it during Whitacre ‘s early years as a student, and then at a regional ACDA convention; a publisher snapped the piece up after that performance and a career in composition for the choral art was born.

The very opening “Go” he sets to what will become a characteristic musical gesture, adding harmonic seconds to a tonic to gradually build an expectant tone cluster. The request that the woman “suffer herself to be desired” expands upwards in sympathetic dissonance, the rose’s death casts back down the musical ranges, and Whitacre reserves powerful harmonic motions for “all things rare” and the final gaze upon the “wondrous and fair” rose.
